Making the perfect cup of coffee is part science, part art—and very personal. Here’s a guide to help you make an excellent cup, whether you’re using a pour-over, French press, or drip machine:
Whole beans are best. Grind just before brewing.
Choose beans based on your flavor preference: light roasts (bright, acidic), medium (balanced), or dark (rich, bold).
Store in an airtight container away from light and moisture.
Coarse: French press
Medium: Drip coffee makers
Medium-fine: Pour-over
Fine: Espresso
General ratio: 1:15 to 1:18 (1g of coffee to 15–18g of water)
Example: 20g coffee → 300g water
Heat water to 195–205°F (90–96°C).
Rinse the paper filter with hot water.
Add medium-fine ground coffee.
Start with a “bloom” (pour a bit of water to let gas escape for 30 seconds).
Slowly pour remaining water in circles over 2–3 minutes.
Total brew time: ~3–4 minutes.
Coarse grind coffee.
Add coffee to press (e.g., 30g for 500ml water).
Add hot water, stir, and place the lid without pressing.
Steep for 4 minutes.
Use medium grind.
Ensure machine heats water properly (195–205°F).
Use clean filters and follow your machine’s measurements.
Use filtered water for the best taste.
Preheat your mug to keep coffee hot longer.
Experiment with beans, ratios, and brewing times to find your “perfect.”
